The history of tequila: a look at the origins of a cult drink

Today it is known worldwide, but the history of tequila goes back to pre-Columbian times. Originally native to Mexico, the legendary agave spirit has developed from a regional drink into an international icon. Whether in nightclubs or at home, it is impossible to imagine the multifaceted world of spirits without tequila.

Origin

The roots of the history of tequila can be traced back to the Aztecs and other Mesoamerican cultures, who revered the agave as a sacred plant. They used the dripping agave juice (also known as pulque ) as a drink for ceremonies and rituals. However, the actual origin of tequila lies in the 16th century, when the Spanish conquistadors produced distilled drinks in Mexico. They recognized the potential of agave and experimented with the distillation of the plant’s juice, creating the first precursor to tequila. The name “tequila” comes from a small town in the state of Jalisco, which is considered the center of tequila production. Today, this region is the only place where real tequila is produced. To ensure quality, tequila production in Mexico is subject to strict standards and is protected by the “Denominación de Origen”, a designation of origin. This designation of origin ensures that tequila can only be labeled as such if it is produced in this specific region and under certain production specifications.

Development

At the end of the 19th century, the industrial production of tequila took off when the first commercial tequila distillery was founded. In the following decades, the beverage market was dominated by brands such as José Cuervo and Sauza, which made tequila internationally famous. Over time, tequila gained popularity as the main ingredient in cocktails such as the Margarita and Tequila Sunrise and found its way into bars and living rooms around the world.
